June 13, the new monotype for the race around Italy was launched near Trieste harbour : the G 34.
10 boats will be on on the start of this race
which corresponds, on the other side of the Alps, to our Tour de France à la voile, for 11 years. The occasion was beautiful to discover this sailboat design by the Finot-Conq office in inshore and offshore racing.

"   We wanted to realize a fast boat, easy to handle for the crew, in short, a boat for the open sea  " explains Jean-Marie Finot who come quite specially in Italy for the launching of the G34 The architect continues  : "   this monotype presents three main characteristics  : a carbon rotating mast stepped on deck  ; a keel in composite  ; the water ballasts  ". The hull shape carries indisputably the "    Finot-Conq   " signature as prove her ratio " length- width weight "- (10,2 m long, 3,4 m width and 3,4 t weight). She reminds, besides, - "  in more wise   " - the monohulls 60 feet open designed by the office.

"I was a little afraid that the cockpit, which is rather big, surprises but finally the crews seem to find it handy. The boat is planed for six team members as that is usual in the race Around Italy or the Tour of France à la voile but it is easily handled for two". Jean-Marie, even, considers that it is, in this kind of small size boats, the ideal sailboat for a transat.

Cino Ricci, the boss of "   Giro Italia Vela    ", the first test where G34 will race, invested without hesitating this new prototype  :

" we used the Dehler 36 next the JOD 35. For the G34, I contacted the shipyard "   Maxi Dolphin   " and I ordered 15 units.
Then, I rent the sailboats to the crews. I have already much navigated on the prototype who is taken out some months ago. The C34 has the performances of a 40 feet  !
We test her as well with 30 - 40 knots regular wind as in dead calm and I can say that she is fast in all weathers. Tacking, against 20 knots wind, she run about 7,5 knots and heads up better than a JOD 35. But it is reaching that she is the best : we went up to 15,6 knots still with 20 knots wind. More, we had only a small geenaker !

It is also a sailboat very pleasant to steer. To compare with the sailboat chosen by the " Tour of France à la voile ", I would say that the Mumm 30 is a small boat very funny but she is not made to tack in a difficult sea during 50 hours while the G34 is then capable because she is a real boat for the open sea …    "

The 11st " Giro Italia Vela " around Italy sailing,  start June 21st from Trieste and  finish July 24th to La Spezia.

G34 will race, October 24 99, the Tour of Corsica. An event which constitutes an excellent opportunity to discover this monotype. So, to follow this race or to make a test on G34 , do not hesitate to contact us.
